Question
My dog is approx 12 yr old she found us 2 yr ago.She had been injured and we took her in. She has lived a very spoiled life I am proud to say, since coming to live with us. Now she is ICU on her 5th day with a bowel obstruction, she is not a surgical candidate. They are usingDSS orally and rectally daily with other enemas bid. Now she is depressed and refusing to eat. She is also being goven buprenex, Ampicillin, and carfafate with iv's. How can I help her . We are visiting BID. We have taken her bed from home, her dishes, food and spoon, but she simply turns her head. We love her so. Please help me ASAP.

Answer
I don't know where you live but bowel obstruction can be a sign of intestinal cancer.  This dog requires a more experienced veterinarian ASAP.  Find one and remove her from this veterinary facility to the next.  A dog that refuses to eat is not necessarily depressed; this can be a sign of serious clinical illness.  This dog might require humane euthanasia but you don't know that since your present veterinarian appears not to be treating this case as s/he should be.  Please repost with results.
