Bichon pup

Question
We have a 12 year old dalmatian female and a 2 year old male Golden Retriever. We recently added a 6 month old male Bichon puppy ( got from the breeder and he got along well with all the other Bichons they had). The Bichon is lunging, growling, barking and trying to bite the older dogs. The older dogs are afraid of him. They are both mild mannered.  What can I do to stop this behavior?  He is friendly with cats and people. Please help. I am at a loss and want a happy household.

Answer
How recent? To me it sounds like he spent too much time at the breeder only socializing with other dogs that he was familiar with size and daily contact.

You can have him on a leash taking treats at a distance for not lunging and barking and managing him other times until he (and they) are more comfortable with each other. Time and social distance will help. Rushing them and hoping all goes well while they sort it out could have the opposite effect.

It is important to honor the older dogs comfort level while you acclimate your new pup. They should have time every day when they do not have to contend with him at all. It will help the pup too!
