My dog chews her bed/towel in her crate

Question
Our 11 month old puppy is doing great as regards house training, etc. However, she chews anything we put in her crate like a towel, etc. She stays in the crate a good bit doing the day while the kids are at school and my wife is running errands. We also were thinking about getting her a bed to sleep in during the night or lay in while hanging out with us but not if she continues to destroy anything we provide for that purpose. Any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks.

Answer
Your puppy is chewing what's in her crate out of frustration and anxiety.  Since she's doing well with house training, I see no need to crate her.  The crate itself might be provoking the frustration.  Try this: a few days in a row, do a setup: leave the dog alone in the kitchen or laundry room, or other area where she cannot do damage to furniture, etc. (and where she will feel safe, young dogs don't need the freedom and responsibility of an entire house when owners are out.)  Leave the house, first time for five minutes, then fifteen, then half an hour, then 90 minutes.  Do this over the course of a few days when you will have the time.  Don't make a big deal out of your leaving (don't announce it to the dog, ignore her for a few minutes BEFORE you leave) and don't make a big deal out of your homecoming (ignore her for a few minutes then greet her).  She will learn that you COME BACK (without any awareness of the time lapse) and she will also have the freedom of not being so tightly confined to the crate.  Try this and let me know how it goes.

Regarding a soft bed for her in your home, it's unlikely she will destroy this simply because she can, or she would be destroying other things in your home as well.  Her destruction of what is in her crate has nothing to do with the fact that it's "hers".
