male cat afraid of female

Question
I have two cats, one male and one female, who rarely ever fight with each other and both are quite friendly to me. However, when I pick up and hold the male cat near the female he suddenly becomes afraid and begins crying. Other times he is fine with me holding him, but when the female is close by he freaks out. Any answers?

That is not a common behavior problem. Just like people, cats have little quirks in their behavior. It could be that he is just showing off in front of the female. I would guess it is something that only your male cat knows the reason why he behaves like that.
