Fun Facts About Guinea Pig Pets

Before they were domesticated, guinea pigs once roamed the earth free like dinosaurs. Well, it's tough comparing a guinea pig to a dinosaur, but yes, they once used to run free in the wild. In fact, 8 million years ago, these so called little pets were over 9 feet long, stood a good 4 feet tall, and weighed in at over 1,500 pounds!

These fun pets are no longer running free in the wild as gigantic monsters but I like to think they now live a much happier life being in the care of humans. Here are some more facts about guinea pig pets that you may not have known.

Even though 'pig' is a part of these domesticated pets name, the guinea pig pet is not at all related to the pig as we know it. In fact, the only reason they have their name is because the sound they emit sounds like a pig and they somewhat resemble that of a small pig. They have a large head with a small body, and a plump body with a pig tail. They also eat...a lot!

Guinea pig pets in the United States give humans a friendly and loyal companion. In and around the Andes region, this little creature is used as a cure to many illnesses. Does it work? I don't know but I think we should leave them as the lovely, adorable pets as we know them here.

Guinea pigs have also been used in North America in religious ceremonies, folk medicine, and were even hunted for food. Yikes! I just can't see guinea pig pets, as small as they are, as food for anyone. I guess back then, you had to take what you could get.

Another interesting fact that you might not know until or unless you own one, is that guinea pig pets are extremely intelligent. These furry little guys know how to work their spoiling owners by making a squeaking noise until they get their treat.

Now that you know more about guinea pigs as dinosaurs, healing animals, and even food, I would strongly recommend using them at what they are best known as...pets. This pet would be a great addition to a small apartment or house. They are an affectionate animal that needs plenty of love and nurture. Guinea pig pets are great pets for anyone, child or adult, and they do deserve a good home with someone who can care for them.
