Part II: Breast Implants and Guinea Pigs

The bottom line is - everyone has their own reasons for deciding to have an elective procedure - whether it be breast implants or LASIK or cosmetic dentistry or whatever.  As long as the patient is becoming a patient because THEY want the change, they have done their research and are well aware of the risks and trade offs as well as the benefits AND....here's the most important criteria......AND they cannot change what they want to change via their own habits (ie diet and exercise or change in habits) then and only then is an elective procedure not only an option but likely to be a move that is life changing for the patient!

In the case of breast implants, most of what we see with our patient is - either they never developed much to begin with and feel like they have a boyish figure - or they have had their babies and during pregnancy their breasts changed so much that they have lost sight of what they used to be or look like.  You can loose the baby weight but you cannot diet and exercise your way back to a fuller, firmer breast!  There is no way other than surgery, to either lift, reduce or enhance a breast.

Today, with breast augmentation recovery risks and time reduced so much - to 24 Hours - and long term reoperation risks reduced to less than 3%, it begins to make sense to think about a surgery  - an elective surgery to change what you cannot change any other way.  In Dr. Tebbetts' hands, even a Mastopexy or breast lift is an easy day surgery with 24 Hour Recovery as well!

So making the decision to do something for you, when you use the criteria I set out above, can become a much easier - clear cut decision.  However, don't be surprised when you make the leap to actually do it if you encounter a bit of interference.  In my experience, the lady who was judgmental to her friend and trainer above, will be the next one in line once she sees how her friend does with the surgery and recovery - they want to bark at you a little, and then see you go through it, then they will sign up.  Being the guinea pig isn't all bad - you get to be the first - the trend setter and on the cutting edge of doing what is right for you!!  What do they say, Lead, Follow or Get out of the WAY!
