Easiest Way to Clean a Guinea Pig Cage. Guinea pigs are a popular pet for homes with children, however, the pet's cage cleanings usually become the responsibility of an adult in the household. Preparing to Clean

Preparing to clean the guinea pig cage will only take a few minutes. Remove the food bowl(s), water bottle, toys, hay bin and any other removable items that can be washed. Empty the contents of the dry food bowls into the bottom of the guinea pig cage. Empty the water bottle into a sink. Discard any left over moist treats into a garbage. Place the accessories in a mop bucket filled with mild bleach water solution. You can also fill the kitchen sink, and let the plastic cage accessories soak there.

Secure the Pet

Remove the guinea pig from the cage. This is a good time for the children to give him some extra playtime inside a small animal playpen, a confined room or sitting on a chair or couch. Never leave the guinea pig unattended while cleaning his cage. If you are cleaning the cage, and are home alone, place an old towel in the bottom of a tall-sided cardboard box or plastic tote, and place the guinea pig inside. Do not put on a lid. Keep him near your cleaning area so you can check in on him every few minutes.

Vacuum and Wipe

Wheel the shop vac over to the guinea pigs cage. Make sure the shop vac is set for dry waste and has a filter installed. Turn on the vacuum and carefully go over the entire base of the guinea pig cage, sucking up all the bedding, waste, left over food and uneaten treats. Use a water-dampened cloth to wipe out the interior of the cage. Go back to the soaking accessories and rinse them well with clear water. Dry them and place them back into the cage. Fill the food bowl, hay bin and water bottle. Add hard chew treats, the guinea pig and you have a clean guinea pig cage.
