3 Ways To Give Your Pet Guinea Pig A Nutritious Diet

Like all creatures, cavies require a varied, balanced diet to make sure that they get all of the nutrients they require to live a long, disease-free life.

It is your job to give your pets this balanced diet through careful selection of the foods you feed them. It is better still if you can also give them a range of foods, so that they don't get fed up of being fed the same food repeatedly.

1. Food Mix

Most pet shops sell several varieties of guinea pig mix. This is essentially a mixture of different foods, such as fruit, nuts, and seeds. When combined, they give your animals most of the nutrients they require. Because of this, food mix is an essential part of your pets' diet.

2. Fruit and Vegetables

As well as dried mix, it is important to give your pets a selection of fresh fruit and veg. Cavies particularly enjoy small pieces of carrot, apple, grapes, and broccoli. Be sure not to feed your fluffy friends too much fresh food though - one small chunk a day is enough, and you should take care to build the amount up slowly if your animals do not already regularly eat fresh fruit and veg.

3. Tasty Treats

As with people, guinea pigs enjoy a tasty snack every now and again. Having said that, you shouldn't give your pets human treats such as cake and chocolate - their stomachs can't to digest them. Instead, choose from the wide range of specially made treats including chew bars and guinea pig nibbles - you can buy these and much more from most high street pet shops.

Getting your guinea pigs' diet right isn't hard, but does require a certain amount of forward planning. However, you'll find that it becomes very easy to do, and it won't take long to give your pets everything they require. Your guinea pigs will certainly be very thankful for it!
