How to Make Guinea Pig Toys

How to Make Guinea Pig Toys. Guinea pigs are playful, fun-loving creatures that are easily entertained by just about anything they can eat, chew on, toss around or nestle in. You don't have to spend lots of money on toys for your guinea pig. There are plenty of items you can find around the house that he'll enjoy just as much (if not more). Read on for some homemade guinea pig toy ideas.

Turn an empty oatmeal container into a tunnel for your guinea pig.

Things Needed

  • Cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls Hay or alfalfa (optional) Cardboard boxes of any size Empty oatmeal container Paper (newspaper or plain) Paper bag

Step 1

Save the cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls and give them to your guinea pig. He'll enjoy nibbling on them and pushing them around his cage. For an extra treat, stuff the tube with hay or alfalfa.

Step 2

Gather any type of cardboard box you can find and make your guinea pig a little shelter to play with. Depending on the size of his cage and the box you have, you can cut "doorways" into it to make a fun hiding space. Just make sure the spaces you cut for doors are wide so he doesn't get stuck. Or, turn the box on its side to provide a space for him to nestle in. Use your imagination--there are endless ways to cut and position boxes that make them fun for your pet.

Step 3

Remove the lid of an empty oatmeal container and cut out the container's bottom, then place it in your guinea pig's cage as a tunnel. He'll love being able to run through or hide in it. If you worry that he may get stuck, cut a slit along the length of the container first.

Step 4

Crumple up a piece of newspaper or plain paper and put it in the cage. Guinea pigs love to chew on paper. Do this only once in awhile, though, to keep your guinea pig's diet centered around fresh food and hay.

Step 5

Give your guinea pig a paper bag to play with. Paper bags make versatile toys--he can hide in them, chew on them, shred them and toss them around.

Warnings

  • Don't give your guinea pig anything that could possibly be harmful for him to chew on or ingest.
