Breeding For Guinea Pig Babies

2016/5/3 9:02:29

Ask any guinea pig owner and they will tell you that guinea pig babies are just about the cutest most adorable things you will ever find. Baby guinea pigs are officially called puppies (yes like the dog) and if you are thinking about breeding your guinea, there are a few things that you must consider first.

As cute as guinea pig babies are, if you decide to breed your guinea, you might need to prepare yourself for dozens of little pups. Most people don't have the room for this many puppies and you may find that you are not able to sell them or give them away because your area may already me over saturated with guinea pig babies.

If you do decide that the market is right, and you want to sell some or keep some for your self, there are a few things to remember before you get started.

First, you are going to need to make plenty of room for the guinea pig babies. And as they grow older, you will probably need to get a few more cages as well. Not only because there will be just too many to fit into one cage, but you will need to separate the males from the females so they don't continue to breed and make even more pups.

Keep in mind also that keeping more guinea pigs means you are going to have more mouths to feed and more supplies to keep them happy and healthy. So in this case, it is going to cost you more money. Are you financially sound enough to take on more guinea pig babies?

Not only will you have to pay more for upkeep of your new guineas but you have to also consider vet fees as well. Animals get sick and veterinarians are there for sick animals but you have to make sure that you are going to have enough to cover emergency visits.

Even selling the new guinea pig babies can be risky. Ask yourself first if you are knowledgeable enough about guineas to be able to articulate what new owners need to do to take care of them. Write out a list of things that new owners need to do so they can feel more confident if they decide to buy a pup.

All in all, breeding guinea pigs is a process that is going to involve a lot of wok for you as the owner. Be prepared for what guinea pig babies bring to the table before you do decide to breed them.
