Salt-water pond with waterfall

My home is on a canal in the Florida Keys, and we wish to build a waterfall with stream down the slope of our property ending in a formed pool at the canal's edge near the mangroves.  I want to circulate canal water up to the waterfall, down the stream and into the pond where I would like to keep indigenous fish.  Of course I will provide them hiding places from the birds, with fishing line criss-crossing to discourage wading birds.  Do you have suggestions and references of places I can read about how to accomplish this dream?
