Question
6yr old gelding paint,is bordered at an equist. ranch. with a group of horse. very nice.
When leading on a trail ride and or riding around the barn alone, there is times that my horse is uncomforable with the direction. He turns completly around and continues backingup.  How can I break him from this habit?

Answer
Hi Robin!

I would have to say your horse is not "uncomfortable" with the direction he is going in.  He is being contrary and disrespectful.  Sure, you could have the vet out to make sure his legs are clean.  But, if he is not showing any outward signs of lameness....he is just messing with you.

You did not say if you own him or if he is a working horse for others to ride.  These could factors play a big part in his issues.

I cannot give training advice to non-owners but, I will say this can be fixed easily enough.  You did not mention any dangerous behaviors and that will make things easier.

I need more info to answer this question competently.  Tack being used, who owns him, previous training and what is he doing for his job right now.

Good Luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
