QUESTION: HI me again..

Ok the Ceporex Oral drops ...each 1 ml reconstituted suspension contains Cephalexin monohydrate equivalent to 100 mg cephalexin.  

My little one is about just under 500g in weight.  We used the rat & mouse club of americas guide and worked out 0.1 ml ever 12 hours.  But now Im worried that Im seriously under dosing her...she has improved but shes still not 100%.

What dosage do you reckon..keeping in mind shes half the size of your boys.  Maybe I should give her half their dosage which is 0.4 ml every 12 hours??

ANSWER: See,mine says that there is 125mg per 5ml of cephalexin monohydrate....it may be stronger.  What does yours say?

If anything I would increase to just .2mls and no more....

QUESTION: Ok, firstly Im sooooo relieved that I actually have the same drug here that you have over there...makes life so much easier.
Wow you got back to me sooo quickly..thanks for that..what time is it over there...its 12:40 here in Cape Town..(Winter has arrived early..our weather is perfectly horrid at the moment).

So yours works out at 25mg per 1ml (my maths is horrid but I thing thats right 125 div by 5).. so the Ceporex is 4 x stronger..so your dosage is 0.6 so 0.6 divided by 4 is 1.50...ok ..Im going to increase her dosage by 0.5...hold thumbs for me...Im sooo hopeful that this is going to work.

How long do you keep your boys on it for...I see that guide says anything from 10 - 30 days...Im going onto day 11...

ANSWER: I would go for at least 21 days.

I know one thing....my biggest boy, Socrates...he is going to have to live off of both keflex and baytril. Soon as he stops it, about a week later, he is right back to sounding like a monkey.  

Last month, he was on baytril first....didnt get better...I put him on keflex...within 2 days all was clear.  We went the full 30 days (he had a secondary infection) so after that....about 10 days or less...I hear that congested monkey sound coming from his igloo and I was like....OH HEEEEEEEEEEERE we go again!! Blah blah blah!  So I get him on the keflex first this time, positive this is why he got better last month....and on day 3, he sounded just as bad so I started the baytril.  SO this time the tables are turned and he responded to the baytril.  To make this story even more confusing, it looks like both meds work and he needs them both, one to compliment the other and this will have to go on the rest of his life.

QUESTION: Ok I'll try for 21 days...

I have this sneaking suspicion I might be in the same boat with my little one...and I keep thinking..ok this time this is going to work..and then we'll go 3 or 4 days and she looks fine..and then overnight she goes from perfect health to sneeze sniffle cough...its infuriating how fast she changes from one to the other...I dont think theres a worse sound than that cough/sneeze and as you say heeeerrrr we go again..the veterinary staff greet me like an old friend Im there so often....

Have you ever had any success with echinacea???

Its supposed to build up their immune systems and it works really well on 2 of my boys..with the other 2 boys it seems to improve their health a little and then it doesnt work at all on my girls.  We have this product for kiddies called Viral choice and its a syrup with garlic, vitamins and echinacea in it..Im dosing all the boys with it at the moment.  I thought what with winter arriving overnight it cant hurt to get the immune systems up.  

I dont want to give echinacea at the same time as a anti-biotic though. I think it might clash..

A local online rattie owner swears by these "tissue salts" you get at health stores...says her rats absolutely luv them..but I havent tried them yet...

Phew!! Everybody has their own remedies...and Im gonna try them all..I just wish I could not have her living on antibiotics..surely it shortens their life span??

No I dont use echinacea because there are too many things that are not good about it.  People make the mistake that if its natural its ok.  Using it for prolonged periods can cause immunity to it. Also your right not to mix them together (antibiotics and echinacea)

What are tissue salts?  If its salt, do NOT use it. Rats and salt can be bad...but I dont know what they are so dont mind me.  It may be interesting to hear it though.

Winter there huh?

Weird.   Its spring, nearly summer here and in the 80s. I have a nice tan going already.  We will be up in the 90s and humid and miserable in no time though and will go all the way through October with hot to mildly hot weather.

How brutal do your winters get?  We dont get much snow, more ice storms maybe twice during our winters which are super short,November is cool, December is colder and Jan is our winter and after that, temps climb back up to around 60s again and now here we are, May and we have been in the  70s and 80s for a month now.
