Puppy cries in crate

Question
We have a 12 week old puggle puppy named Roxy. We got her from a pet store and have had her for a little over a week now. She is actually doing pretty well with potty training and obedience. However, we have a problem when we put her in her crate at night. She is pretty good with it during the day. She will whine for a minute or 2 and then lay down. At night, she will whine and cry for a little while when we first put her in. That part is not a big deal, we just ignore her and she quiets down. Then she is up whining and barking about ever 2 hours or so. I know it takes time for her to get used to it, but will this barking last forever? I don't know whether she really has to go out and go potty or if she just barks to get out of the crate and I should ignore it. Either way, We have have night had a good night sleep since we got her. We even bought a little thing that puts out an ultrasonic noise when she barks to make her stop. Like a bark collar minus the collar. I don't think it works. And in fact I wonder if it just makes her mad and makes things worse. Do you have any advice? How long will this last?

Answer
What type of crate is she in?   Sometimes the plastic airlines carriers can make a dog cry because they feel boxed in.   If you are using one of those, I suggest switching to an open wire crate.

What kinds of toys are you leaving in the crate with her?  She needs something to keep her occupied.  I use a sterilized bone and the dogs/pups will chew on them for hours and end up snoozing the night away.

A 12 week pup should almost be able to sleep thru the night; however each dog is different and needs time to adjust to your routine.  The barking will not go on forever, but I can't tell you how long it will last as every dog is different.   Most trainers say it takes a dog up to 30 days to fully adjust.

I would not suggest any type of "device" as I've heard bad things about them.

Try taking her for a long walk or having a heavy play session right before bedtime.
