Question
Hi, I am so glad I found you and I hope you can help. I am fostering a male cocker spaniel and have a female cocker as my own pet. From day 1 of living with me, Roxy "got" the doggy door. Jack, on the other hand, is not so on the ball and I am getting frustrated because I don't know what I can do to change things. He will go out and in the door, but only if I escort him. I walk out the door and I make him use his door. If he needs to go pee, he will. I praise him a LOT when he does it, and when he goes back inside he gets a treat.

But he hasn't gotten the idea that he has the door available to him 24/7 and will still pee in the house if I don't escort him out. I have a job with long hours, and really need him to learn this for the times I can't be here to go out with him.

A little about his personality, he's very beta, seems smart enough, has learned how to sit, doesn't seem to have been abused (he was an owner surrender at the pound). I think the issue may have to do with the fact that he wants to be with me 24/7.

I really hope you can help! I honestly thought the doggy door would be a no brainer like it was for Roxy, but it's been two weeks and we have made very little progress.

Thank you for your time :-)

Tracey

Answer
The door itself may be a problem.  Some dogs feel that the door part is too heavy, and others get scared of the snapping noise the door makes as it closes.  Here's a protocol that I like because it attacks the problem in stages, and is designed for the shy dog:
