Question
Sleepy
I adopted a female Australian Shepherd/German Shepherd mix who was about 5 weeks old at the time. When I adopted her, she had sarcoptic mange and seemed to be desperately underweight at under 3 pounds.
We dealt with the mange and I have been feeding her Wellness Super5Mix for Puppies (initially wet, and gradually switched to dry) since then. She currently gets 2.5 to 3 cups per day spaced out between two meals. At 4.5 months, she weighs about 25 pounds after a meal and 21.5 pounds when without food or water overnight (as when she went in for her spay surgery).
Is this a good weight to be at?
AnswerNot being able to see the dog, I can't say. But, I can tell you how to check. Her condition should tell you. By that I mean that if she is standing up, when you look at her from above, you should be able to see a waistline behind her ribcage. It's also good if you can feel her ribs, but not see them. There should be a little cushion of flesh over them, but not a "fat pad". If you are in doubt at all, ask your veterinarian to have a look. All dogs are different, but in the photo she looks lean, but not skinny, which would be ok. I also think she looks more like an Aussie/Hound mix than a German Shepherd mix. The white tail tip is a hound feature and her tail is very long and thin, not like either a Shepherd or an Aussie tail would be. Fun to guess, but I'm sure we'll never know for sure:-)
