Question
I am looking for some advice please, I have a 5 month old Aussie male, who is extremely hyper.. no matter how much exercise i give him.
He constantly jumps up at me and all other members of my family. I also find that on a night, he will not lay down and relax, he paces the floor... I have an 18 month old female lab and they would playfight 24/7... can you please give me some advice on how to limit the playfighing as they both seem to ignore anything i do to try stop this, also how can i get my Aussie to stop jumping, i end up with scratches all over my arms, legs torso etc...
Thank you in advance

Answer
I don't know how you have been exercising him, but walking on lead is insufficient for these dogs, who were bred to work cattle all day, sometimes in less than favorable terrain or weather.  At five months, he is also in the puppy "zoomie" stage, and so part of the unruliness will disappear if you take time to train him well, although the general energy level will probably always be high.  My Aussie is almost 4 years old, and still never gets tired for too long!  One thing you can do to tire him out is to do some "mental exercise" with him.  Aussies are sooooo smart, and they take to clicker training pretty readily, so I would direct you to this site: www.clickerlessons.com to get you started.  If he is jumping up on you, give him NO ATTENTION whatsoever and leave the room for five or six seconds.  If he calms down, pat or say "good boy" quietly, if he jumps, leave again.  Be persistent - dogs eventually stop doing things that don't work.  He will figure out that you only pay attention to him when all his paws are on the floor;-)  Try to have everyone in the family treating this the same way.
