Question

rescue puppy
We are fostering a puppy we pulled from animal control. She was listed as an aussie/mix. After getting her home I am thinking she looks more like a Catalouh Leopard Dog. We have two aussies and are considering adopting her however, I have concerns about her dominance if she is part CLD. Please look at her and let me know your thoughts on her breed mix.
Thank you

Answer
Long coat is a dominant characteristic, and it's probably likelier that this is a Catahoula mix because of the short coat, not that two recessive genes couldn't have gotten together to create it.  There's something a little hound-y about the fact and ears but that could just be the photo.  Aussies generally have more almond shaped eyes, as you know, not quite so round.  That said, I would assess the individual dog based on its own temperament, and take into consideration, but not base your decision entirely on the general characteristics of a breed.  Sure, many CLD's are "dominant" (I really hate that term, because it doesn't speak to the many nuances of status in doggy relationships - the dog that likes to get to the door first may not care who gets the water bowl first, so who's really dominant???)
Because you are dealing with such a young puppy, and can take it to class, socialize it well, and gain control in a nice way, the likelihood is less that you would have problems, given that the pup has a nice manner.  I've had several Catahoula mixes come through my classes and they are all still in the homes that adopted them.  While you are fostering, try some clicker training (www.clickerlessons.com) and see how she does.  If she is pushy at all, ignore her when she is demanding, but reward her when she's quiet and calm.  See if she takes that direction ok.  One thing is - she's awfully cute!!!!
