Question
Every time we let our dog outside to go to the bathroom she won't go until we let her back in. Then she will go to her bed and go. How do we stop her from doing this.

Answer
Hi Shawna, First of all, you must never "rub a dogs' nose in it", do not scold, nor hit your dog for making mistakes inside. Take your dog outside to the same spot several times a day, especially when it wakes from sleeping, after eating and drinking, and when you arrive home or remove it from it's crate. When you go to the same spot (preferably by a bush or tree), give a command such as "take a break" or "potty", and wait as long as it takes until your dog either urinates or defecates or both. Then praise it lavishly for a deed well done. Teaching your dog that the crate is a good and safe place to be will also help. Proper crate training will aid you in house breaking your dog. Never use the crate for punishment. Leave the door open at first and make it as appealing as possible so that your dog will go in by itself and learn it is a place of comfort. You must have patience when waiting outside for the dog to go. You cannot rush it when you are housebreaking. Wait outside for as long as it takes, even if you must bring a good book with you. Most dogs will not mess in their crate, and you should gradually increase the time the dogs spends in the crate until it's bladder can hold it for a few hours. Take it immediately out when it comes out of the crate, wakes up from a sleep, finishes eating or drinking. This is VERY important! If you follow these few simple rules and do not get angry or frustrated if a mistake happens, you will have a happy, house broken dog in no time at all. Please leave me some feedback and a follow-up to let me know how you are doing. Thank you for writing. Warm Regards, Susan
