Canine Bowel Obstruction

My 11 month old black lab has taken to eating shoe straps, bras and socks.  What signs can I look for for bowel obstruction?  My worst fear is that I will not know he ate something and then die from it. Thanks for all your help.

This problem needs to be taken to the veterinarian ASAP.  Eating (compulsively) foreign objects is a disorder that can be treated with medication.  The veterinarian can far better instruct you on what to look for in your dog's behavior that might indicate a bowel obstruction.
