Question
Hello Elaine,  I haven't used this site for eight years but had such success last time hope you can be of help.
I have three West Highland Terriers - three generations.  I am a breeder.  Grandmother, mother and daughter 10, 6 and 3 respectively.
The three year old has recently had her third litter and all has been well in paradise - no problems .... until this week when the 3 year old has begun whining, and whining and whining - and growling ... at everything and everyone.  She would never bite but has become protective of her mother's litter to the extent she sits with the pups all day just rumbling away and chasing the mother away.  The pups are five weeks old so feeding isn't an issue and the mother really doesn't want a great deal to do with the pups but Grace is driving us mad with this crying during the night, wanting to go and sit with the pups.  Should we let her take over this "after care"??  Even while taking them to the park in the car ... she cries and whines!  PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Hi Helen,

Breeding is not my area of expertise, but it seems that the mother of the litter (as written it appeared that the 3 year old was the Mom, but I think no). If the actual mother is shunning them and she wants the job, let her do it. It should dissipate in a couple of weeks and or you will start to separate them then.
