Question
The owner of a boarding kennel is complaining about a four year four Bull Terrier which is pushing his food bowl underneath his body between his hind legs, with his front paws.  He eats his food as fast as he can then starts to play with his metal bowl.  He uses a throwing action causing a lot of noise that disturbs other dogs.  Once the game has begun, it continues without stopping.  How can his behaviour be changed?

Answer
It isn't up to any owner of any boarding kennel to attempt behavior modification on a client's dog.  In order to lessen the cacophony created by this dog's behavior (which may be anxiety related), the metal bowl should be removed and replaced with a weighted, heavy plastic bowl.  Distracting the dog by entering his kennel with a toy allows the attendant to remove the bowl.  Discuss this behavior with the owner upon his/her return.  Feeding a dog once a day is basically a starvation regimen; the hungrier a dog is, the more frantic its behavior around the food bowl ("wolfing" food, anxiety, etc.).  A very high quality kibble should be fed twice daily and the smaller the kibble is, the better, since a dog that "inhales" its food is not getting adequate nutrition from it.
