Question
I have a male English Bull Dog approximately 6 months old. I can not break him of pooping in his crate, he will also urinate in it and roll in it. He is confined during the working hours but I come home at noon and he is let out for approximately 1 1/2 hours and then let out again around 4:30 p.m. for the evening. Once he is confined he will poop in the crate. Any ideas?

Answer
The English Bulldog has (unfortunately) become quite popular.  I say "unfortunately" because this means unscrupulous "breeders" and puppy mills are now cashing in on this popularity.  A dog that routinely chooses (as your dog is doing) to eliminate in the crate has had a rough, and dirty, beginning (before you met him.)  His dam (mother) was likely too exhausted from overbreeding and undernourishment to clean up after her puppies and they may have been forced to live in filthy conditions.  A dog that demonstrates this tendency CANNOT BE CRATED.  It is counter productive, obviously.  Confine him to the kitchen or other area where his "accidents" can be totally cleaned; PRAISE AND REWARD every appropriate elimination he performs outdoors (this mean YOU MUST GO OUT WITH HIM EVERY TIME.)  Dogs repeat behaviors that are rewarded; if you are consistent and patient, he will learn to eliminate outdoors.
