Dog snarls when told no

Question
Hi,

Someone I know is having an issue with their dog snarling anytime they tell it no or use any type of negativity with it. For the most part this dog is VERY friendly. They have an issue with jumping and barking. They tried telling her no when she jumps or barks, ignoring the behavior, and even using a squirt bottle (filled with just water) to discourage the behavior. The dog reacts to the "no's" and water bottle by snarling and barking more.

I guess I just want to know if this behavior is fixable and if so how.
Also, is this a sign of an aggression issue?

Answer
The behavior is fixable, but only if the people change their tactics.  It sounds as thought they are very aggressive with this dog and that can lead to the dog being aggressive back.  They may think they tried ignoring the dog, but often, the humans don't do that long enough, or they make eye contact (which is rewarding to some dogs) or they get impatient and scold or push the dog.  Also, when using the "ignore" tactic, it's important to reward the dog for having all its paws on the floor or for sitting nicely to greet.  Tell your friends to go to www.clickerlessons.com and try training the dog instead of confusing the dog with all these mixed signals.
