The largest snake in the upper peninsula is the western fox snake, which grows to 5 feet in length.

Michigan's most common snake, the eastern garter, falls into this size range, growing up to 4 feet. Several of the species are only found in the lower regions of the state, such as the 3-foot northern ribbon, 4-foot eastern milk and 3-foot queen snake. The northern water snake grows to 4 feet and is found in both the upper and lower peninsulas. The eastern hognose is found in the same range and grows to just under 4 feet.

Small Michigan Snakes

Smaller snakes are more common in Michigan, with six under 3 feet in length. The smallest species in the state is the brown snake which grows to just 15 inches and is found throughout Michigan. Other species found across the whole state are the 16-inch red-bellied, the 20-inch smooth green and the 24-inch ring-necked snake. Found just in the lower half of the state, Butler's garter snake grows to just over 2 feet. One of the state's rarest and most endangered snakes is the 18-inch Kirtland's snake.

Venomous Michigan Snakes

Michigan only has one venomous snake, that being the eastern massasauga rattlesnake. The species ranges throughout much of the lower peninsula in wetland areas. It is considered a species of concern due to decreasing population numbers. The snake grows up to 3 feet in length and has a relatively weak venom compared to other rattlesnakes. Humans who are bitten should still seek prompt medical attention.
