Question
I have had two budgies I got one about a year and a half ago and after  I   realized I didnt have enough time to spend with the bird I felt guilty and  got him a companion bird and they really  like each other, they whisper and tweet and spit gross mucusy seeds at one another.  My daughter built a nesting box in woodshop at school, although its not open at the top it just has a hole for the bird to go in and out of.
I feed them good quality food, rich with dried vegetables and fruits, and also supplement their water with this vitamin stuff i have.
I thought my female was losing weight, I talk to them and spend at least some time with them every day. But low and behold an egg is in the box, I put some nesting hair in the box according to the instructions but she just keeps throwing the hair out of the box and leaves the  egg on the bottom of the box, just loose. Does she have to stay on the egg for it to hatch? does it need to be warm? and lastly, there is only one single egg, should there be more?

Answer
Dear Terrylynn,
thank you for your question.
Budgies don't use nesting material, they lay their eggs on the naked floor of the nesting box or tree cavities in the wild.
The female should sit on the egg all the time and usually she lays more eggs every two days. I guess your female doesn't want to raise chicks or maybe she needs to train the correct behaviour first.
I recommend replacing the egg or eggs with plastic or plaster eggs until she has completely given up on them (usually after 20 days) and then taking away the nesting box. If you want to breed with them, you need to learn about genetics to avoid dead or malformed chicks. Apart from that, there are many budgies in animal shelters that are looking for a good home already.
Offer them cuttlebone and germinated seeds to supply the female with minerals and give them fresh fruits and vegetables, chickweed for example is great for budgies.
I hope I was of some help to you
