Question
conure given to user of albuterol and atrovent inhaltion solutions in nebulizer, produces excess vapors which circulate thruout house. Is this safe for the bird. name of truly knowlegeable source of info would be greatly appreciated. So far have found nothing from mfr's or pet health sites.
Thanks, Gary

Answer
I'm working on original sources in teaching tools to reinforce this; however, if the nebulizer is used in a remote location from the bird - or the bird is removed to a distant location, there shouldn't be a significant threat.

The reasoning is that the meds are bronchodilators and heavier than air. While you might smell them in the house, the actual particles are not necessarily floating around and breatheable by others, including the bird.

One way to better imagine this is to remember the last time you cooked something that scented the whole house (a cake, spaghetti sauce, apple pie, hot chocolate?) - though everyone, including the bird, could smell it - it wasn't actually entering anyone's system.

Just like the nebulizer doesn't make system changes on those people in the house not using it, it shouldn't effect the bird either.

Now, obviously, birds are much more sensitive to things we can't perceive and for this reason alone I'd take the precautions of distance, but in that you're not finding reports all over the internet about nebulizers killing pet birds - it's a good thing.  If one nebulizer ever remotely harmed even one bird, you can be sure it would be exaggerated and circulated nonstop right along with the rest of the net nonsense we all have to dig through on a daily basis.

See us and feel free to check back here or at my site anytime, for any reason
