new fancy mouse

Question
I recently purchased my second fancy mouse at our local petsmart about two days ago. I'm going to be honest i was lucky with my first mouse(Stuart) because still this this day he has no medical problems(knock on wood). But my second mouse(scabbers) seems to be making a strange noise that i have never heard Stuart make. It almost sounds as if he were a guinea pig. It sounds exactly like a guinea pig but in a much higher pitch and he especially makes it once Stuart is around. For now I have them in their own housing tanks because I dont want them to fight but they do have a neutral "play" tank as i would call it where they roam and thats when Scabbers goes nuts with this noise. i have been reading a lot more about mice now because the vet in my town doesnt know anything about mice and I stumbled upon how squinting eyes isnt a good sign either. His eyes are squinky but its looks as if he just woke up? Maybe im just paranoid because I dont want the worst for Scabbers but if you happen to know an answer to this mouse please let me know! thank you

Answer
Hi Kayla,

Squeaking is usually a sign of pain, fear, or sometimes even surprise.  Since they are both males, I would think Scabbers is afraid of, or being harassed by, Stuart.  They do not need (and probably don't want) playtime at the same time as each other.  Check Scabbers over and make sure he's not hurt anywhere, just to be on the safe side.

Mice are nocturnal, so it could absolutely be possible that he's just squinting because he's sleepy or from the light.  As long as there isn't discharge, crustiness, swelling, or scratches around the eye, he should be just fine!
