Follow up- are puppies getting along?

Question
Hi.

I forgot one part of the question I asked a few moments ago.  I have a 11 month old lab/hound and 3 days ago I adopted a 13 week old beagle.  My older dog won't leave the puppy alone for a moment.  He steals all the toys and bites/plays every second.  I think the puppy likes it but I am not sure.  When I separate them, they both cry.  How can I tell if they are getting along?  Will they eventually settle down or will they play this way forever?  Is this type of play normal?

Thank you so much

Laurie

Answer
Hi Laurie, I have seen this time and time again in my own pack. The command I use to keep peace is "SHARE". I will give them each a goodie or put a yummy meal in a pie pan, when one dog tries to get more than his/her fill, I say "SHARE" and give the aggressor a slight pinch on his/her neck. Don't separate them as they are both part of your pack. Just spend the time to teach each of them that they must share. If you give them both a bone, stand in between them while they eat their goodies and if one tries to steal from the other give that dog a quick pinch and share command. This establishes you as the Alpha dog and they will quickly learn that they can eat in peace and play together. But food must be shared.  Make sense? Don't worry, I am sure they are getting along, they just need you to teach pack manners. You will be fine. Thank you for writing again. We really do appreciate feedback, nominations, and follow-up questions because as volunteers it is the only way we know that we are doing a good job for other dog owners. Thanks again. Regards, Susan
