doesnt like being left alone!

We have a 5 month Sussex Spaniel who is great in every way. Our only problem is that he barks or howls whenever we leave him. He is usually fine when put to bed at night but if we go out during the day he will bark for a few minutes before settling down. He always likes to be very close to us when we are in the house, always staying within sight of us. Any ideas?

How long do you normally leave for? You will probably have to gradually get him used to you coming and going. The best way to do this is to provide lots of toys, give plenty exercise (more chance of him sleeping when your out), and you leaving without a fuss, returning mins later, rewarding if no barking, and then increasing the time you leave for. Toy wise, look for kongs, fill them with peanut butter or similar.
