My dog displays signs of territory defence behavior, this includes excessive barking, threatening to bite people coming to the house, letting people in but not out of the house, attacking mail that comes through the door.

How should I tackle these behaviours?

What kind of dog is it? How old? How long have you had him/her? How long has this behavior been going on? What kind of training has the dog had? And training philosophy was used--dominance or treat training? What have you been doing to try to stop the behavior? How much hard, vigorous outdoor exercise does the dog get every day? Where does he/sleep at night? Do you play tug-of-war or fetch with him or her? If not, what kinds of games does s/he like? Is s/he motivated/easily distracted by food?
