on leash aggression

Question
My 2 1/2 year old lab is great with people, and does quite well at dog parks.
However, when I take her for walks on her leash, or take her to a ball game
she is aggressive when we approach other dogs, especially small ones. She
has been attacked by a small dog in the past and she has never forgotten it.
We also have a new neighbor with a dog that she insists running over to
(through her invisible fence). It is never a healthy encounter either. What can I
do on our walks to avoid confrontation. I don't want to be that person that
has to leave the dog at home all the time and avoid taking her for walks. I
want to fix the problem.

Answer
Hi Rachel,

Have you read Feisty Fido? It's an entire book dedicated to leash problems, more common than most people think.

Brand new equipment will get things started. Try using the sensation harness attached to a leather leash, the harness hits accupressure points and a leather leash will give your hands more of a grip. Making you both feel better!

If she is crashing the IF then it's not the right piece of equipment for her. She can't get back in once she's out!

Take her out for short successful walks every day or she will worsen, the trick is keeping her at a non reactive distance and focused on something really good instead of the other dog like steak bits.

Read that book it will help!
