The Lakeland Terrier!

The Lakeland Terrier is one dog that, if it weren’t for its breathing or any sign of movement, could be mistaken for a stuff toy. It exudes a wonderful combination of smart, spunky and elegant look. Its elongated head has a bushy hair on the foreface, V-shaped ears that are folded, eyes that are dark or hazel, and a nose that is dark. Its hairy legs are strong-boned and upright, it stands as if on toes. Its coat comes in several combinations – black, black and tan, reddish, red grizzle, wheat, liver and blue, tan and grizzle, etc. This coat is wiry and hard on the outer layer, but is soft in the inner layer. It has a tail that is upright and set on the back. This breed is also fondly known as the Lakie, but was once called the Patterdale Terrier.

Lakeland Terrier Skills

The Lakeland Terrier originated in England’s Lake District as a working dog. Its original functions included hunting fox, otter and rabbit as well as guarding sheep. It also haunted in water and rugged terrain. This dog thus is great in hunting, tracking, and even watchdogging. Furthermore, it was also popular in dog shows, showing off its talents in obedience trials and agility tests.

Lakeland Terrier Personality

The Lakeland Terrier is lively spirited, very affectionate, and loyal to its humans. It is highly active and playful, a great companion even with children. Unlike other Terriers, this canine enjoys the company of other pets. It can be reserved to strangers, but generally, it is a friendly dog. Although it can be independent-minded and tend to be difficult to teach the discipline of obedience, it is nonetheless a dutiful pet once trained properly. Smart, it should be given a variety of training programs, for it loves challenges. It enjoys digging and even barking. Its being a feisty protector extends to its food and toys.

Exercise Needs

The Lakeland Terrier will appreciate and benefit from an occasional run, without leash, on an open area. As an energetic dog, it will respond well to sports activities like catch and agility drills.

Living Conditions

Being a high-spirited and energetic dog, the Lakeland Terrier will be satisfied in apartment living, even without a yard.

Grooming Requirements

The Lakeland Terrier is a minimal shedder and is thus compatible even with allergy sufferers. However, its old coat must be pulled out by hand two to three times a year. Loose hair must also be removed from its ears and feet.
