The Schapendoes!

The Schapendoes is a medium sized, shaggy breed, also known as the Dutch Sheep Dog. This shaggy herding dog originated in Holland and has existed for centuries. Though they were popular in their native land during the 19th and the early part of the 20th century, the breed抯 popularity took a dive when farmers began importing Border Collies to work sheep. In 1947 the breed was brought back from the brink of extinction.

Schapendoes Skills

Being a herding breed the Schapendoes has a great deal of stamina and endurance. This breed is swift and levelheaded, though they are known to have minds of their own. The breed is known for their jumping ability and they excel at agility and obedience.

Schapendoes Personality

Schapendoes are good family pets. They are friendly, amusing and are always ready to play. They are quite social with humans, which makes them a great choice for families with children. Aggression and timidness are not a trait that is usually found in this breed.

Exercise Needs

Schapendoes are active dogs who need at least an hour long walk daily along with some other form of vigorous activity (running, herding, dog sports). They thrive if they have a job to do.

Living Conditions

The Schapendoes is exceptionally social and thrives when it is with its family. The more fenced in space it has to run, the better!

Grooming Requirements

The Schapendoes has a double coat that requires weekly brushing to prevent matting. At 6 months to 18 months this grooming regimen is especially important as the puppy coat is being replaced with the adult coat. Brushing will prevent the topcoat from being tangled with the undercoat. Shedding in this breed is minimal.

Health Issues

The Schapendoes is a hardy breed, typically living between 12-16 years. Health issues can include Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Hip Dysplasia.
