Buying and bringing up a pet is a lifelong commitment for any pet owner. It not only involves general caring, grooming and training of a puppy but also feeding the pet in the right quantity at the right time so as to ensure the overall growth right from the stage of puppy to an adult dog.

The most essential thing which a pet lover needs to understand while feeding his pooch is that there should be a kind of stability while feeding a pet. Feeding the same type of diet for a pet over a period of time helps the pooch to get adjusted to the food easily and also aids in digestion. Any change in diet should be done gradually and should not be introduced suddenly one after the other.

Puppies generally grow faster than an adult dog and require foods which are high in nutritional value. They also need to be fed in small portions at regular intervals of 3 to 4 hours in the beginning gradually reducing it to 3 meals a day and finally to 2 meals a day to be followed for the rest of its life. In case a pet owner does not have knowledge about the same he can seek the advice of a vet.

Canines are basically hyperactive and like to run around and if they do not drink enough water, the chances of getting hydrated become more leading to urinary tract infections. In such situations, a pet owner can try giving his pet canned food to his pet. Canned or wet food being rich in moisture solves the problem of water requirement of a pet. Moreover wet food is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, easily palatable, digestible and also tasty.

Canned food is good for dogs which are trained to eat watery foods from a bowl and not for those dogs which are messy eaters. Canned food is suggested by the vet as ideal for dogs having dental problems or for dogs suffering from damage to the sense of smell. The aroma of canned food being strong, dogs get attracted to canned food. But it becomes difficult to clean the teeth of dogs eating canned foods especially more so if some of the pet’s teeth are missing.

This is the reason for many pet owners opting dry food for their pets rather than wet or canned food. Dry dog food is considered excellent for a canine’s teeth. Also they are easy to store with a better shelf in comparison to wet food. Nutrition wise dry dog food is healthier as compared to wet or canned food due to their higher grain and also protein content. The cost of dry dog food works out much cheaper than wet dog food.

With a wide variety of semi moist, tinned and dry dog food available in the market, it becomes difficult for a pet lover to decide the perfect food for his pet. This dilemma can be overcome by either visiting a vet, doing a little bit of research to find the perfect food for a pet, by following a guideline or by discussing the pros and cons with other pet owners. In case a pet loves a particular type of food it is better to stick to the same and not keep introducing different food everyday as this may cause indigestion and further health problem like obesity in a pet.

Not feeding the pet while travelling and allowing the pet to eat in a peaceful environment are some of the precautions to be taken by a pet owner while feeding a pet dog. All these steps if followed diligently will ensure that a dog of any breed grows into a healthy and strong pet.
