Puppy Training Tips

Training your new puppy is much the same as it is for most animals. As the trainer, you communicate to your dog what you want them to do. (ie. stay off couch, no chewing shoes)  When your dog has performed as desired, you praise them and offer a reward. Through being consistent and repeating the exercise throughout your day, week, and month, the puppy's response to the command will become second nature and automatic. There are no quick fixes, but take a look at these tips below to help you train your puppy. 

Communicating With Your Puppy

Being able to interact and communicate with your new dog is limited. In some cases the trainer can show the simple action you want the puppy to perform. Sometimes the dog trainer needs to use a leash and calmly work with the dog to persuade them to perform the task. In certain instances, "Sit!" or "Come!" for example, you can give your dog the appropriate command every time you see that they are about to perform these actions naturally. Using a soothing voice and praising them with a pat on the head, they will slowly connect the cause and the effect. The key here is patience. And being consistent with praise and encouraging effort. Be calm with your new puppy.

Using Commands and Hand Signals

When giving directions to your new dog aim to be calm, patient, and crystal clear in repeating your commands and hand signals. Above all, be consistent. If your dog sits there cocking his ears with a lost look, it is time to examine your approach. "Are they distracted? Do they need some exercise before training?" The message you're trying to impart is not getting through to the puppy. And the responsibility is on you the trainer and owner to make sure you're approaching this correctly. Start over again. Try to clarify your command, while examining your reason behind what you want done. And perhaps approach it with a different mindset and intention.

One Word Commands

Brief, one-word commands are best. As the puppy grows up, you can use the key training word in a longer sentences. But this will come later. When your dog has grasped your command and performed to your satisfaction, reward the dog and repeat the performance to solidify the behavior in the puppy's memory. Three to five times is great within the first few lessons. Do not overuse the command, because then it will become a struggle to refocus them on the command.  Practice patience, and don't over-do the command when starting.

Exercising Your Puppy and Cementing the Behavior

After exercising your dog, you should repeat the lessons again the following day. Being consistent and practicing this training command day-after-day will reinforce the behavior you seek and cement the behavior into your puppy's mind. You will see that your puppy enjoys using their new skill, as they aim to please you. Certain conditions are necessary for successful training. Try to schedule the lessons at the same time and in the same place, one that is a secluded as possible and free from distractions such as passing cars, playing children, and other animals.

Overview of Dog and Puppy Training

The learning process from the puppy's point of view involves listening attentively and watching you as you give a command. Once it realizes that each sound and gesture signifies something it is being asked to do, it is working with you. When this sequence has been established in the dog's mind, there truly is no limit to what you can teach your dog.

 With all these fresh tips in mind, please remember to have a deep sense of patience. Never hurt or lose your cool with your puppy if it loses interest. Simply collect yourself as a trainer, and approach the training at a later time. Do not try to train an overly tired dog, an ailing puppy, or one that has just eaten. The puppy will only become frustrated and his only memory of your training will be an unpleasant one. You'll achieve the same results if you are also nervous, irritable, or in a bad mood. So be very aware of what kind of energy you're brining to the training session too. Remember: Give your puppy your time, attention, patience, and love. And you'll see that they will return that back to you as they grow old with you.
