How To Choose The Right Dog For Your Home

Ask anyone who's owned a dog and they will tell you how much their canine enriched their lives. Dogs make great companions and very few animals can touch our lives as much as they can and do. If you're thinking of getting a dog and would like to know which breed is the perfect one for you, here are a few things to consider:

Breed: Deciding whether to get a mixed breed dog or a purebred can be a difficult decision. Mixed breeds are usually hardier and have a healthier constitution. They are generally easier to take care and less prone to breed specific conditions and disease. There are mixed breed dog clubs that organize shows for mixed breeds so you won't have to miss out if you'd like to show your canine.

Purebred dogs can be a joy to own, however you should research its lineage to see if there are any inherited health issues you should consider. Most purebred dogs have breed specific diseases that they can develop so be sure to look into that before deciding on a particular breed.

Space: Another important aspect of owning a dog that you should consider is the amount of space you have. If you live in a small apartment and don't have a backyard, you should consider a small or medium-sized one. If space isn't an issue and you have a yard, then you can opt for a larger one. Small dogs are generally easier to handle and take care of than larger ones and some apartment buildings only allow small canines in the building so be sure to check your building's rules on this.

Temperament: Always try to pick a dog that matches your personality. For example if you're active and athletic you should choose one that can share your love of the outdoors, but if you're a couch potato you should get a dog that will enjoy lounging around the house with you.

Children: If you have children make sure you pick a dog that is gentle with children. Certain breeds such as Labradors and Golden retrievers make great family pets for households with children so do some research before bringing a dog home to a house with young children.

Owning a dog is a lifetime commitment and one which shouldn't be taken lightly. You will be responsible for its needs and dogs bond strongly with their owner. Don't bring one into your house unless you're 100% sure you can take care of it for the rest of its life.
