Question

our Alexandrian parrot
Hi there, I have recenty got a Alexandrian green ring neck long tailed parrot. The shop keeper has cliped his wings already, He is tamed, I take him out of cage, n teaching him some words. He sits on my finger & allows me to kiss him on head & wings, but some time he gets angry also while going near to him. Once when he was in cage, I was doing something with the stick, he got angry, and started saying some word called 'mithu mithu'. Then whenever he gets angry, he says that. I want him to speak, in good mood. Whats your call on this? Pl reply. Thank you so much! best regards, Pradeep (India)

Answer
What a beautiful photo - this is a very lucky bird.

Even though it might seem like he's angry, birds like this don't often get angry, but they are very smart.  What is probably happening is that he's just not in the mood to be handled or interacted with sometimes.  We humans feel that way now and then right?  Even though we enjoy some things, we have moments when we would rather not.

When it comes to stick, he has natural instincts that alert him to possible harm, even though he knows you love him and nothing but gentle, those instincts will always win out.  It is what would keep him alive were he in the wild.

Very young birds like this also make noises that to them might sound like words - and he might think he's actually saying something to you.

Be patient when it comes to his talking.  Whenever you are doing anything with him or for him, talk about it.  Make sure he knows you're talking to him.  One of the birds I've rescued wasn't much of a talker, but she was a good listener!   Still, every day when I changed her water I'd say 'water'.  When I gave her some banana, I'd say 'banana' and whenever I walked into the room I'd say 'hello'.

Imagine my surprise when one day as I was changing her water she mumbled the word, sounding something like "Wah duh".  I reacted enthusiastically and gave her a lot of praise.  Within a few days she was clearly saying "Water" whenever I gave it to her and when on her out of cage perch she began asking for "water" when she was thirsty.

She says "hello" perfectly now too and though she doesn't have a lot of words in her vocabulary, she is always surprising me with one now and then.

Her lack of conversation isn't even noticed - she has many other ways of communicating and like I said, the best part of having a bird is that are great listeners.

You obviously love your ringneck - I believe you will find he's perfect, no matter how much he talks or doesn't talk.
