Puppy Training

Question
I am thinking seriously about getting a puppy, however I do have a full time job M-F 7:30am-5pm, is it possible and fair to be able to have the puppy and house train him/her quickly with this schedule? Any advice?

Answer
7:30 to 5PM is far too long to leave a puppy alone.  Puppies require extensive socialization to the outside world as well as to other pups, children, etc. For any dog to spend nine hours a day alone is difficult but for a puppy it can spell disaster in terms of temperament development and trainability.  If you're set on having a dog, I suggest you contact local rescue organizations, the SPCA or your local municipal shelter.  Thousands of adult dogs are put to death every day in the US and giving a home to an older dog (which is already housetrained in many cases) will provide you with a very loving and devoted companion and it will save a life.
