How to Care for Pet Bullfrogs

How to Care for Pet Bullfrogs. For some pet lovers, a fluffy cat or energetic dog just doesn't cut it. Whether you're a frog lover, an amphibian aficionado or just someone looking for an interesting pet to keep in a tank, a bullfrog may be the perfect pet for you. Like any animal, owning a bullfrog requires a great amount of care. With the right habitat, proper nutrition and good overall care, a bullfrog can be a great pet.

Take good care of your pet bullfrog.

Things Needed

  • Glass aquarium
  • Gravel or small rocks
  • Plants
  • Tank thermometer
  • Insects

Step 1

Purchase a large glass aquarium with a screened lid to keep your frog from hopping away. Make sure the space is spacious enough to accommodate a large frog; for instance, a 50- to 75-gallon tank is often sufficient.

Step 2

Create a bullfrog habitat within the aquarium. Spread a thin layer of gravel or rocks on the bottom of the aquarium, making sure to cover the glass. On one side of the aquarium, add more rocks so the substrate is a few inches taller than on the opposite side. Add clean water to the side with the lower substrate. If you do not have a filter, change the water daily.

Step 3

Add some fake branches and plants to the habitat. This gives the frog a place to hide, as well as a little shade.

Step 4

Attach a tank thermometer to the aquarium. Keep the bullfrog's habitat between about 77 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5

Set up a lamp with a light bulb nearby for light and warmth.

Step 6

Feed the bullfrog. Purchase insects or bugs, like crickets or mealworms, at a pet shop. Place a small dish of clean drinking water in the tank too.

Warnings

  • Do not use tap water as its chemicals can kill your frog.
  • Be careful of the frog's teeth when feeding your pet.
