tis The Season For Pet Holiday Safety!

The holidays are almost here. Its that wonderful time of year for celebrating, rejoicing and general merriment. And certainly not to be forgotten, this includes our pets too. Raise your hand if youre like us and dress up your dog or cat to get them in the festive holiday spirit!

But did you know there is danger lurking at this time of year? Pets are susceptible to a wide variety of issues that could lead to an emergency vet visit on Christmas Eve.

Here are a few things to consider this holiday season:

Ornaments can easily be swallowed.

Ornaments are purposely designed to be a shiny addition to your Christmas tree. Animals are drawn to things that they can playfully bat at. Before you know it you have a full blown game of cat (or dog) and mouse on your hands.

Pets are also prone to chew on things, dogs especially. Ornaments can quickly lodge in their mouth, making it difficult or impossible to breathe.

Keep ornaments out of reach by placing them high on your tree. If you use ornaments for decoration around your home, follow the same method and place them high.

Garland, bows, and strings can cause blockages.

Be extra careful about how accessible your pets are to garland, bows, strings, tinsel and other festive holiday dcor. When swallowed, these items can get lodged in your pets tummy and wreak havoc on their digestive system.

Sweets are not good for your pet.

We all know the old warnings about certain types of foods no chocolates, no grapes, etc. But did you know that all types of holiday candy can be bad for your pet?

Just like us, pets need to watch their waistlines. Candy and other sweets (think cookies, cakes, etc.) can put unnecessary calories into your dog this holiday season.

If you want to give them a special treat consider bones or even fresh fruits like apples. Theyll never know what theyre missing!

Monitor, monitor, monitor.

The best thing you can do this holiday season is keep a watchful eye on your pet. Be aware of what they are interested in, and make sure its nothing that can be dangerous for them. And most of all enjoy the holiday season!
