Dog Barking And How To Stop It

2016/5/4 10:21:33

Ask dog owners about the canine behavior that causes them the most grief and the answer you're most likely to hear is, "barking". Dogs bark, and if you own a dog, other than perhaps a Basenji, its something you'll have to accept.

That doesn't mean, though, that you have to put up with incessant, problem barking.

Why Your Dog May Be Barking

As with any canine behavioral problem, the key to addressing problem barking lies in understanding the root cause, because different kinds of barking call for different solutions.

Here are some common reasons why dogs bark;

1. Boredom - A dog that is not exercised, and gets little mental stimulation, is always likely to develop a barking problem.

2. Anxiety - If your dog suffers from separation anxiety expect a lot of barking every time you go out or return home. Your neighbors will also tell you that the dog barks constantly while you're away.

3. Warning - Dogs are naturally territorial and will normally bark at a stranger entering their space. This can actually be a desirable trait, but not when the dog barks at any threat, real or imagined.

4. Attention Seeking - If you cater to your dog's every whim, chances are you will raise a spoilt, pampered pooch who demands attention. And barks when she doesn't get it!

5. Surprise - A dog that is startled by a sudden movement will normally sound off a warning - usually after retreating to a safe vantage point!

6. Playfulness - Dogs are excitable creatures, and barking is a natural way for them to express their enthusiasm for a game, treat or favorite toy. A bark may also serve as encouragement for you to join in the game.

7. Communicating - Dogs vocalize in a number of ways, the most common of which is barking. Barks have many meanings, ranging from a greeting to a threat.

How To Stop Your Dog Barking

The most obvious way to stop your dog barking is to be in control of your dog. But obvious as that sounds, many dog owners fail in this basic requirement.

This is a pity, because all it really requires is some basic obedience training, and consistent pack leadership. In addition, all dogs need regular exercise. This should include daily walks as well as games and activities that provide mental stimulation.

If your dog is a problem barker, ask yourself whether he gets enough exercise. If the answer is "no", then I'm afraid you have little cause for complaint.

In addition to training and exercise, there are a number of things to avoid - unless, that is, you enjoy the sound of constant barking.

Never shout at your dog when he barks, and don't ever punish your dog for barking. On the flipside, don't reward your dog's barking behavior, for example giving him what he wants just to shut him up.
