How to Safely Travel With Your Pets

Planning a road trip with your pet in Kitchener? Travelling with a pet involves a lot of things. It's more than just loading the pet in the back seat. You need to plan out the things accordingly, specially if you will be driving long distances. There are various veterinarians in Kitchener who guide pet owners about how to keep their pets safe and secure while travelling.

Here are simple tips to help you prepare for a safe and smooth car trip:

Make sure you keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. These days there are various types of soft-sided or hard plastic carriers available. Whatever type of carrier you choose, it should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit and lie down.

  1. If your pet isn't familiar with car drives or trips, take him/her out on a series of short drives first, gradually increase the time spent in the car. And always be sure of the crate that it is firmly attached so it won't slide in the event of a quick stop.
  2. You also need to make some changes in your pet's feeding schedule. Feed him/her three to four hours prior to departure. Avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle.
  3. It is advised to not to leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, a parked vehicle always turns into a furnace that can lead to heatstroke in your pet. In cold weather, a car often acts like a refrigerator which can freeze your pet to death.
  4. Prepare your pet travel kit carefully. You need to put travel papers, bowl, food, leash, plastic bags, grooming products, medication and a pet first-aid kit for any emergency. Also, don't forget to pack your pet's favorite toy or pillow to give it a sense of familiarity.
  5. It would be great if your pet has a microchip for identification and wears a collar with a tag having your contact details and other relevant information. Always get a flat collar for your pets to avoid choking.
  6. While driving, never let your pet take out his head outside the window. He could get hurt by flying objects. And also make him sit in the back seat in his crate or with a leash attached to your seat.
  7. If you are planning to travel across state lines, never forget to bring your pet's vaccination records as a proof at certain interstate crossings. While, this isn't a problem, but it is always better to stay safe.

Keep all the above points in mind while traveling with your pets. It is advised to consult with your veterinarian first before planning long distance trips.
