Wildlife Removal and Habitat Control - The Skunk

2016/5/4 10:10:46

HABITAT - The natural home of the skunk is the open grassland found close to forests or other dense areas of trees where they can quickly run to for cover. Despite these areas and preferring their own company, it seems that many skunks are still unable to avoid man and his world. Of the four types of skunk found in North America the striped is by far the commonest, and most likely to turn up on your property. Once there they will need a place to nest, breed and sleep. If they cannot gain access to a garage or shed, they will burrow a hole by physically digging under your porch or the house itself.

DANGERS - An adult skunk weighs seven to eight pounds on average and has extremely sharp claws which it needs for excavating. They will not seek you out for attack and confrontation is almost always accidental. Unfortunately confrontation becomes inevitable with animal and man living at such close quarters, especially for family pets. Skunks are very seldom rabid, but they do carry and can pass on the rabies virus. When there is no escape they become extremely aggressive fighting animals. The foul smelling spray that they release is only a nuisance compared to the wounds they are capable of inflicting. Family pets would need to be vaccinated; if a dog contracted rabies it would become far more dangerous than the skunk.

AVOIDANCE - To keep skunks away from your property, the most effective thing you can do is make it unattractive to them. Short grass with no visible clusters of wood, garden rubbish or any sort of waste pile will seem like an eyesore to a skunk. Make sure surrounding walls and fences are secure, fencing or cement placed below the ground will prevent them from burrowing under. A skunk's favorite diet is mice, moles, garden vegetables and fruit. They are also partial to freebies from the garbage can, so it is essential that such lids are firmly secured.

REMOVAL - If removal does become necessary then it is imperative that a trained expert is called in to do the job. Being such a dangerous animal when confronted, it would be foolhardy for anyone without proper knowledge and qualifications to take on such a task. Only experienced personnel would know the correct measures to take in such cases. There is no need to have headaches over skunks when a little common sense is all that is needed.
