Are Barking Dog Collars a Good Idea?

2016/5/4 10:07:24

Peace and Quiet at Last: There are some dogs who just don't understand that barking isn't breathing. For the owners of those dogs, barking collars are a gift from Heaven. Barking collars use the same kind of technology found in invisible fence collars to help you train your dog not to bark without reason. In my opinion these types of collars should not be used with small dog breeds. Some of the smaller dog breeds like the Yorkie, Maltese and Chihuahua. Smaller breeds can suffer from hypoglycemia if they get stressed so a barking collar isn't right for breeds like this. If you have any questions please contact your local vet or dog trainer and discuss your options with them.

Effectiveness: Almost every dog can be trained not to bark with a barking collar. There are two basic models: electric and citronella based. There are those that have a serious problem with the use of any electrical shock device on a dog and opt to use the more human citronella. With that said, no one denies the effectiveness of it though.

Citronella collars work by projecting a scented spray at the dogs face. Dogs don't like having something sprayed at them and the fact that it is astringent and intense and given the dog's heightened sense of smell, makes it even worse. Considered every bit as effective as an electric collar, the citronella collars are gaining in popularity.

Controversy: If you choose dog barking collars, you may want to be discrete about it. There are owners who have reported being verbally attacked for putting them on a pet. You can call it an e-collar, a training collar, or just about anything but an electric shock collar and avoid the storm of criticism.

Of course, while it isn't anyone's business how you chose to train your dog, it will not stop people from expressing their opinion on your decision to utilize the the electric collar. Despite this, you need to choose the collar that you believe will work best for your animal. Finding the right collar

Each collar manufacturer makes bark collars in a variety of sizes and strengths. Purchase one that suits your dog specifically. Collars for large dogs will provide too much current for a small dog and in the reverse, they won't provide enough current for your larger dog. The spray pattern of a citronella collar needs to fit the facial area of the dog being trained, so size is a consideration here as well.
