Who Is Really In Charge, my Pomeranian or Me?

It can actually be more difficult to train a toy dog breed than a larger dog because face it, a toy breed, like the Pomeranian is so cute! But that doesn't change the fact that they are a dog and think like a canine, as did their ancestors before them. Puppy training is the best time to start with giving simple orders and expecting results. Yes, even when they cry, whine, and look at you with those sad brown eyes. Although just a baby, a puppy will test its superiority over a human and size means nothing to him or her.

One of the biggest problems that owners of Pomeranians complain of is jumping. No, that's not just what small dogs do; you allow it. Understanding why dogs jump on people is critical in bringing a halt to it as soon as it begins. When you allow your Pomeranian to jump on another person or yourself, you are letting them show disrespect and giving them permission to be the boss. It may appear sweet to your guest but explain that it is not tolerated so there is no coaching.

Another bad habit that needs to be nipped in the bud during puppy training is growling. Growling at another dog is not acceptable. Growling at your guests is not acceptable. Remember, your Pomeranian is not just protecting his or her turf; they are showing aggression that they are in charge. Don't ever forget that there is only one pack leader (no, they don't know or care that there aren't a dozen other dogs around them), and that leader is you.

Of course, you purchased your Pomeranian to be a companion, a friend, someone to talk to and love but an out of control dog is no buddy. They expect to follow orders from their commander and if you aren't in charge, they will be. Many Pomeranian owners allow their dogs to sleep with them or jump up on their lap because they think it shows them how much you love them. Your bed should always be off limits. It is all right to put their bed on the floor but allowing in your bed definitely gives them authority. Your lap is an area where they can be welcomed but only when you ask for them.

It will be much easier to pull yourself together and get this over with in puppy training than try and undo all of your mistakes once the damage has been done and your Pomeranian is older and in charge. It could even be fun! You are probably getting a sour taste in your mouth just thinking about correcting your puppy when all they are trying to do is protect and love you. Get past that. Pomeranians or any other type of toys, medium or large dogs are not people and they do not think like people. Listen to trainers, read books, and watch films about dog training. Cruelty comes from not training your dog and causing them confusion. Your life and your Pomeranian's will be happier and more fulfilling when you have the trained pet of your dreams and he or she has their leader.
