Puppies Pet Store Encouraged to Promote Pet Shelter Pups

     The Humane Society has started a campaign to make the public more aware of chain pet stores selling puppies from puppy mills. Much of the public is not aware of these facilities where dogs are incessantly bred. Living in cramped, unhygienic conditions where the air is toxic with animal waste many of the animals suffer health and behavioral problems. This is the only life the puppies have known when they are delivered to the puppies pet store.

The American SPCA has begun a movement that is named No Pet Store Puppies to create an awareness about these puppy mills. They want to discourage pet stores from selling pups from puppy mills and to consider finding their new pet from an animal shelter instead. The society also is encouraging the public to boycott pet shops that sill pups from mills.

Many chain store owners have made the decision to stop purchasing their puppies from these kinds of breeders. Working together with their local animal shelters they try to find homes for the homeless animals who have been well-cared for in the shelters. Some store franchise owners cannot be ordered to stop selling these animals by the head office since the stores are independent businesses. It is up to the owners to make these decisions.

The little dogs born in these mills enter a caged world where often the air is toxic with uncleared animal waste. They are kept outdoors in all kinds of weather and develop behavioral and health problems. That cute looking little dog in the pet shop window may actually harbor an inability to socialize with their new family.

In many US states these breeding facilities are not regulated so the females are bred on a regular basis until their fertility starts to wane. They often are sold to other breeders who will try to extract one last litter from them. In the end they are abandoned and left to die. As the public becomes more informed of these undesirable breeders the greater the chances that they will be shut down.

Animal shelters take in about eight million pets a year. Many have started programs offline and online to introduce people to the loving animals that have not been euthanized. In the US many shelter pets are euthanized but could have been adopted if there was a better awareness of the availability of these animals. Many people are under the impression that there are no young dogs to adopt from a shelter.

There are cities where government has established a ban where pet shops are not permitted to sell animals from breeding facilities. Retailers can legally sell animals from rescue and shelter groups or donations. This legal action was prompted after over five hundred dogs were rescued from an animal breeding facility in Quebec. Quebec has the reputation for being the puppy mill capital of North America. Many dogs were suffering from respiratory and skin problems.

Puppies pet store is spreading the word about going to the local pet shelters to look for a pet rather than a store. Volunteers have lovingly cared for pets in these shelters and they need a permanent home where they can reciprocate their companionship. They have been well fed and have had their necessary shots and neutering done. Many people will find a faithful companion from their local pet shelter.
