How to Tell the Difference Between Male & Female Frilled Lizards

How to Tell the Difference Between Male & Female Frilled Lizards. Frilled lizards, also known as frill necked lizards and frilled dragons, are excellent pets and are known for having distinct and curious personalities. Keeping frilled leopard geckos does require time and consideration, and whether for health reasons or for breeding plans, being able to identify male frilled lizards and female frilled lizards is important. Purchasing unsexed frilled lizards is less expensive than purchasing an adult whose sex is known, but you do risk getting an animal that cannot be bred due to incompatible sex.

Step 1

Look at the size of the frilled lizard. As an adult, a male frilled will be substantially larger than a female frilled lizard. Regional variation can place the top size of a male frilled lizard between 30 to 38 inches in length, while females can range from 24 to 27 inches.

Step 2

Look at the size of the head and the teeth. Male frilled lizards will have larger heads than females, and their teeth will also be longer and broader.

Step 3

Look at the femoral pores underneath the hind legs. The femoral pores are located around the thigh area, and they contain a pheromone-carrying wax. On a male frilled lizard, the femoral pores will be larger than they are on a female frilled lizard.

Step 4

Examine the lizard's frill. The frill is the flap of skin around the head that the lizard extends to frighten off enemies. The coloration can range from yellow and orange to black. The frill can also be spotted with orange, white and red. In the males, these colors are much more vibrant, even from a young age, than those of the females.

Step 5

Handle the frilled lizard. Male frilled lizards tend to be more relaxed and to act more tame, while females are fairly skittish. This does tend to hold true in both imported and captive bred specimens, which are bred domestically and tend to be calmer in general.

Warnings

  • Sexing a frilled lizard can be difficult until the specimen reaches maturity.
