How to Feed a Western Fence Lizard

How to Feed a Western Fence Lizard. A western fence lizard makes an easy-to-care-for pet as long as you meet its nutritional needs, and it can be your companion for a long time. A western fence lizard can live up to eight years with proper care. The lizard's size determines the size of its food. Small western fence lizards need small food while larger lizards can manage bigger bites. The western fence lizard is a carnivorous animal, and will prefer live prey; such as the lizard would find in its natural habitat.

Keep western fence lizards healthy feeding them the kinds of small insects they would eat in the wild.

Things Needed

  • Calcium supplement powder
  • Measuring spoon
  • Plastic bag
  • Beetles
  • Gut-fed crickets
  • Insect larvae
  • Moths
  • Flies
  • Caterpillars
  • Ants
  • Wild-caught spiders
  • Small arthropods

Step 1

Pour 1/4 teaspoon, or two pinches of calcium supplement powder into a plastic bag.

Step 2

Drop between about eight live insects or larvae into the bag with the calcium supplement.

Step 3

Close the bag and gently shake the bag so the powder covers the insects. Do not shake the bag too hard.

Step 4

Pour the insects into the lizard's food bowl or feeding area.

Step 5

Store the bag with the calcium supplement powder so you can reuse it the next day when you feed your western fence lizard.

Warnings

  • You do not need all of the lizard foods listed for each meal. You can choose and combine them according to what you find available.
