How Do I Catch a Lizard That Is Outside?. Observing lizards is an educational hobby. Watching a lizard in its natural habitat teaches you how lizards live and eat on a day-to-day basis. However, up close observation gives you more insight into the life of a lizard. Catching a wild lizard outside and putting it in a cage gives you the opportunity to observe nature up close.

Things Needed

• Latex gloves
• Plastic cup
• Plastic wrap
• Twig

Step 1

Check the weather. Lizards enjoy moist areas. Go outside on a cloudy day after it has rained or while it is sprinkling.

Step 2

Go to a wet area in your yard or a wooded area. Look for lizards toward the bottom of trees such as near the roots. Turn over rocks and leaves, as well. Look at the trunk of the tree for easy to see lizards.

Step 3

Quietly approach the lizard. Put on a pair of gloves. Gently scoop the lizard up with your hands.

Step 4

Cup your hands together as closely as possible.

Step 5

Place the lizard in a cup. Cover the top of the cup with plastic wrap. Poke holes in the plastic wrap with a small twig. The holes provide the lizard with plenty of air.

Warnings

• You can use a small fish tank net to scoop up the lizard instead of your hands. Find the lizard you want, quietly approach it and catch it by placing the net face down on top of it. With the net on top of the lizard, put your cup close to it. Gently push the lizard into the cup with the net.
• Move the lizard into a temporary habitat as quickly as possible. Provide plenty of leaves, dirt, food and water to the lizard in a small aquarium.

Warnings

• Do not keep wild lizards captive for an extended amount of time. A wild lizard thrives better in its natural habitat.
• Do not do anything to the lizard that might harm it.
